Chennai: Traffic congestion in the KK Nagar-Nesapakkam area can be resisted in November when Metrowater is expected to complete replacing the old pipeline carrying waste from the residential area of the Kodambakkam zone to the Nesappakkam treatment plant.
A senior Metrowater official said the old pipe at the intersection of Anna’s main road and Mgr Nagar Market was placed more than 45 years ago.
Over time, it was broken and residents complained about waste overflowing into the street.
Metrowater then decided to replace it under the RS 2.2 Crore project, the official was added.
Metrowater also built three new entry points on stretching to install machines that would maintain the maintenance of the underground waste system.
On Thursday, the Minister of Administration K City K Nehru visited a new waste treatment plant in Nesapkakkam and reviewed progress.
Plants, using ultra-filtration technology, can treat waste to 10 million liters per day.
Metrowater also put the pipe throughout a 12 km stretch to transport the water treated from Nesapkakkam to Lake Porur, with 88% of the work of installing machines and electrical equipment has been completed.
The Minister has directed officials to complete work at a waste treatment plant before next January and conducted a trial.
Chennai Metropolitan Air Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), Metrowater, have allocated Rs 47.24 Crore for this project.
