Kolkata: Asansol and Bankura in West Bengal recorded the highest rainfall in history in the last 24 hours even as low pressure which was well marked, causing heavy rain, moving to North Jharkhand and Bihar, the weather office said on Friday.
However, upgraded rainfall activities, it will likely continue in South Bengal Regency until Friday morning, he said.
Aasyi in Western Burdwan recorded 434.5 mm rainfall in 24 hours to Thursday morning, while Bankura, the city of Bankura District Headquarters, recorded rain 354.3 mm during the period, he said in a bulletin.
“This is a 24-hour historical highest rainfall which is recorded so far in asanso and bankura,” said the weather office.
The previous highest for asansol was 192 mm on July 27, 2018, and for the maximum rainfall bankura recorded was 292.4 mm on June 22, 1922, he said.
Low pressure, which has caused heavy rain in the South Bengal District since Tuesday, located in North Jharkhand and adjacent to Bihar on Thursday afternoon.
Rain or Bower with lightning is likely to continue in South Bengal Regency, the weather said while holding out a ray of hope for better weather than Friday.
Heavy rain until very heavy likely to occur in one or two places in Western Burdwan and Birbhum Regency, while heavy rains are likely to be in certain places in Bankura and Purulia districts until Friday morning, he said.
Other places that record heavy rain during that period were Durgapur (200 mm), Purulia (170 mm), Kangsabati (140 mm) and Phulberia (110 mm), said the weather office.
Kolkata received 21.7 mm rainfall during that period, he said.
The North Bengurduar District in Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and South and North Dinajpur tend to receive very heavy rainfall on Saturdays and Sundays, he said.
