Guwahati: Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, the face of anti-caa agitation in the state, suffered a shameful defeat at Thowra, the only seat where the new regional party was contested at Bypolls Assam with high hopes.
Akhil himself pioneered a campaign in Thowra because it was close to Sizasagar, represented by him.
RD Fielded Akhil’s Close Aide and former leader Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti Dhaijjya Konwar in Thowra.
Sushanta won as a Congress Candidate in the last poll from Thowra with a sleek margin against BJP, but this time he won with a large margin of 30,561 votes.
Dhaijjya only gets 24,395 sounds that come second.
Sushanta is in a triangular fight with Dhaijjya and Congress’s ManoRanjan Konwar.
“There were no organizational activities in Thowra before we decided to compete from the chair about three months ago.
The Chairman of Minister of Himanta Buswa Sarma discussed 11 election meetings in two days in Thowra and four ministers camping there to defeat RD,” said the President of the Workers RD Bhasco De Saikia.
RD has sent a proposal to Congress to support their candidates only in Thowra to seal poll transactions but the congress has rejected it.
After Akhil won the last election of detention of justice, their focus was near Thowra.
But BJP also launched a nonstop campaign in the chair to reach voters in the household in every Pancayat.
For some political observers there was a high chance for the opposition victory in Thowra, but the BJP leaders sniffed turmeric wins long before – not because of broken opposition unity but the development agenda.
“Except Gossiigaon, in four other seats, the opposition cannot win even if we combine their voices.
The BJP LED alliance believes he will win in all five seats because of good governance and development transfer by our government,” BJP spokesman said Rupam Goswami.
Assam PCC President Bhupen Borah said the loss of their captain, Sushanta and Rupjyoti Kurmi, at the Jok Thowra and Mariani at Assam for the Prospect of Congress.
He, however, said that the Grand Old Party will return to the fort earlier because the Congress is eyeing 33 Lakh members in Assam during the State membership drive launched on Monday.
