Assam: Barak Valley to get four-lane road under Bharatmala project

SILCHAR: A four-lane road from Cachar’s Ramnagar to Churaibari in Karimganj district in south Assam will be constructed soon under the Bharatmala Pariyojana (Bharatmala Project), a senior official of the Cachar district administration said on Thursday.
The official further informed that a high-level meeting was held at the DC’s office on Wednesday in which the 109-km alignment of the road received a green signal.
The proposed road will connect Ramnagar with Churaibari via Kalinagar, Panchgram, Katigorah and Malua among others.
The National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has been assigned for the project and they presented a blueprint of the highway during the meeting.
A centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project, under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme a number of bypass roads will be constructed as part of its mega project.
Special emphasis will be given on providing connectivity to the border and rural areas of the state.
The project will interconnect 550 district headquarters through a minimum 4-lane highway by raising the number of corridors to 50 and move 80% freight traffic to national highways by interconnecting 24 logistics parks, 66 inter-corridors out of a total of 8,000 km, 116 feeder routes and 7 northeast multi-modal waterway ports.
As part of the Ramnagar-Churaibari road project, three bridges — two over the Barak river and one over Katakhal — will be constructed.
Of the two bridges over the Barak, one will have a distance of about 1200 metres, while the other one will be around 500 metres in length.
The total distance of the road from Ramnagar to Churaibari will be 108 km.
While 32 km of the road will pass through Cachar and 72 km through Karimganj, 4 km of the road will make its way through the Hailakandi district.
Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), Silchar division, said that the project will be implemented with a visionary approach to develop connectivity in the rural parts of the state.
All the state capitals in the northeast and seven multi-modal waterways will be connected with the corridor to provide a fillip to the economic scenario in the region, they stated.
