Assam boards to do away with announcement of rank holders this time

GUWAHATI: With the new evaluation strategy without tests almost ready, the Assam state boards are set to do away with the system of announcing the names of 10 rank holders in Class X and XII board examinations this year.
The Class XII modalities committee headed by Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University vice-chancellor Dipak Kumar Sharma is ready to submit the recommendations before the education department on Friday.
“We are going ahead to finalize the modalities in the lines of the CBSE and other state boards, though everything won’t be the same,” said Sharma, adding that the class X board exam results may be considered as the base to evaluate the class XII examinees.
The committee is likely to consider giving weightage to class X board examination results and class XII pre-boards to evaluate the students.
The examiness who are registered in class XII could not appear for their class XI final examination last year.
“We can assure that the students won’t be losers.
There won’t be any official announcement of ranks in the both examinations, but one can expect that most of the students will get better results than they expected.
Weightage will be given to class X board results, internal assessment exams of class XI and class XII pre-boards and practicals which have been held already,” said a source in the education department.
The panel for class X board examinations, headed by former Dibrugarh University vice-chancellor, Alok Buragohain, has submitted its report before the education department on Thursday.
Buragohain said that the district inspector of schools have submitted substantial amount of data regarding the results of the students in class IX and in class X internal exams.
He said that the evaluation process will consider the performance of the students in these two years.
“Students should get maximum benefits, but it should be scientifically justified and based on data,” he said, giving a clear indication that all students won’t be promoted.
The results are likely to be declared by July 31.
Amidst marathon meetings conducted by two hi-powered committees constituted for formulating the evaluation formula, sources privy to the committees said that the marking strategy has been finalized.
The two committees, notified on Saturday, were given mandate to submit their recommendations within a week.
Even as utmost confidentiality is being maintained by the two committees, sources said that the overall pass percentage is likely to go up significantly.
The schools have sent the internal assessment marks of the registered examinees who were relieved from appearing for board examinations due to the prevailing Covid situation.
