Assam CM to open Covid hospital on day govt turns one month

GUWAHATI: The Himanta Biswa Sarma-government will celebrate the completion of one month after the formation of the new government, by dedicating a 300-bed Covid hospital, set up by the DRDO, to the people at the Sarusajai Sports Complex here on June 10.
“Our target is to start the Covid hospital in Sarusajai on the day when the new government completes one month,” state health minister Keshab Mahanta said.
He added that the opening of the hospital would ease the burden on the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital and other healthcare facilities, which had to close almost every other service for treating Covid patients.
“Took stock of the development of the 300 bedded Covid Hospital under construction at #SarusajaiStadium along with MD @nhm_assam, DRDO & Health officials & #GMCH principal.
Hon CM @himantabiswa will inaugurate it on June 10, on the 1st month anniversary of the newly formed Assam Govt.,” Mahanta tweeted later in the evening.
He said that the DRDO assisted Covid hospital will start functioning as an annex hospital of the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).
“Simultaneously, we will start the healthcare facility that has been set up in the parking space of GMCH as another hospital,” Mahanta added.
The health minister was hopeful that if Assam gets more vaccine consignments, as expected in the next two months, the entire population of the state would get vaccinated in the next three months.
The minister said focus will now shift mainly to vaccination, as he said both positivity and Covid fatalities have declined on expected lines.
“In the next phase, our target is to inoculate three lakh people everyday and talks are on with the Centre in this regard.
When the plan materialises in about the next two days, we will appoint 1,000 nurses immediately,” he said.
Health officials said the Covid situation has shown remarkable improvement in the state, which was imminent at the 3.06% positivity recorded on Monday, after conducting a mammoth 1.24 lakh tests.
A total 3,804 new cases were detected on Monday, with 318 positive cases in greater Guwahati that comes under the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district.
Even though the state’s recovery rate has further improved to 87.76%, the death numbers remained static at 37.
Health experts, however, advised more caution, as about 1,800 people are still undergoing Covid treatment in Guwahati and so the second wave is far from over.
“The Covid positivity has not gone down convincingly.
Still lots of efforts will be needed to bring the positivity rate to one percent in Assam,” said GMCH principal, Dr Achyut Baishya.
