Assam: crime as 50% CCTV in non-functional city

Guwahati: Inadequate CCTV surveillance has caused an increase in crime such as a daybuber in Guwahati.
The city, has a population of around 13 lakh, has nearly 200 CCTV cameras that are 50% not functioning.
In 2019, Police Assam and Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) have taken a project called “City Supervision Project” to install a total of 4,000 CCTV cameras throughout the city.
The project fee is Rs 2,296 Crore.
Without quoting reasons, GSCL Managing Director Ghanshyam Dass told TI that the project was dropped.
“The police department keeps the problem of CCTV supervision in the city,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police source said there were several CCTV cameras in a prominent city location.
“The current function of CCTV cameras is not enough in the city that has a large population,” added the source.
At least eight Daylight robbery incidents have occurred in the city since September where criminals robbed good money by breaking the vehicle window or by grabbing bags from the owner.
The latest incident took place in the Chandmari area in the city last week when criminals looted RS 25,000 in cash from a vehicle parked with the main road by breaking the vehicle window.
Previously on November 1, two criminals looted RS 3.5 Lakh from someone’s vehicle that had just attracted money from the bank in the NoOmati area in the city.
Not happy with the sluggish attitude and department concerned, Denizens firmly urged the government to ensure security and security urgently.
Niranjan Deka, a Septuagenarian from the Chandmari area, said, “Without increasing CCTV supervision, it is impossible to prevent the increasing trend of crime in the city.
CCTVs that have enough must be installed in each city area along with leading places.
The police cannot be deployed in every corner And angle.
But supervision can be increased by using technology.
