GUWAHATI: In another major blow to Manipur drug smugglers, the Karbi Anglong district police in Assam on Monday arrested two Tamil women, Lashmi D and Panjabhiram, and one Manipuri man, Khoiram Basanta Singha, and recovered three kg contraband drugs worth Rs 12 crore in international market from their possession.
They have been booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
This was the second big seizure of drugs by the police in a week.
According to the police, the drugs were seized by home guard jawan Borsing Bey from a Guwahati-bound bus at the Dilai police checkpost at around 10pm on Monday.
The drug packets were concealed inside the engine cabin and was being transported to Chennai.
“A huge amount of bribe was offered to me for not disclosing the matter to the higher officials.
I refused to take the money they offered and immediately called the Dilai police station in-charge.
Within minutes, he arrived at the spot and arested the smugglers,” Bey said.
Karbi Anglong SP Pushpraj Singh said: “Karbi Anglong district is used by smugglers as a transit route to transport drugs to other parts of India.
The district is located near Dimapur in Nagaland.
Dimapur is one of the hubs where drugs are collected, packaged and then transported through Karbi Anglong to other parts of the country.” Meanwhile, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has announced Rs 1 lakh as a reward to Bey for his “selfless and courageous act”.
Earlier on Thursday, police had recovered more than 2 kg drugs worth Rs 7 crore in the international market and arrested two persons, Paone alias Didi of Senapati district in Manipur and Kevin Movi of Dimapur in Nagaland, in this connection.
Didi is a big catch for the police as she played a big role in transportation of over 60% of drugs entering Assam through National Highway 36 and National Highway 39.
