Guwahati: Four-year-old female giraffe was found dead at the country zoo here on Friday.
Division Forest Officer (responsible) Zoo, Ashwini Kumar, said the giraffe died in Wee Friday, and post-mortem would be made to find out the exact cause of death.
“Prima facie, death seems unintentional because it is sufficient, but the cause will definitely be known only after autopsy,” he added.
Giraffe, named Rongili, was taken to Assam in December 2019 from the Patna Zoo along with a male giraffe from the Mysore Zoo, with permission from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
Giraffe was brought to Assam as part of an animal exchange program after eight years of gap.
Parimal Forest Minister Suklabaidya ordered an investigation to ensure a situation that led to the death of the giraffe and asked DFO to submit a report within three days.
Kumar said the male giraffe was fine.
The state zoo considered carrying two zebras from the MySore Zoo at the beginning of next year.
It will send two horned rhinos one to Shaheed Ashfaqulaah Khan Prani Udyan in Gorakhpur in January as part of an exchange program between the zoo.
