Guwahati: Agriculture Minister Assam Atul Bora on Saturday launched a bodoland pork mission in Kokrajhar to change the territorial territory of Bodoland (Btr) to a dog hub.
This initiative aims to change the traditional way of life from thousands of household livelihoods into sustainable economic activities.
The target of producing 1-lakh kg pork per day has been regulated under the mission, which will directly involve 30,000 households in breeding / maintenance activities.
“The Bodoland Pig mission is a new initiative for farmers to make the BTR Hub Pigery Hub.
This mission was initiated by BTR administration to create awareness of the independent livelihood in the region,” Minister said, adding that the mission would make Assam Mandiri in pigs.
Bora said the goal was to check the northeastern market and neighboring countries.
Pig nursery facilities, quality feed supply at competitive prices, veterinary services, improved skills and farmer registration, livestock identification and insurance facilities, the development of value chains and market relations will be given under the mission.
Pigs accounted for 38.5 percent of total meat consumption in Assam.
This is an important source of income for more than 10 lakh households and 2,500 commercial entrepreneurs in the state.
It is estimated at 1.94,000 tons of pork for sale in Assam every year, while the value of the pig market is Rs 582 Crore, according to state government data.
