Guwahati: Head of Minister of Assam Himanta Buswa Sarma and his partner Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma on Friday said the two countries would establish a committee to resolve border disputes between their countries.
The two panels will be led by the cabinet ministers every state will be established, they said.
Committees will aim to resolve border disputes gradually in six of 12 sites debated at first, the ministers said at a joint press conference here.
Each panel will have five members, including the Cabinet Minister of each country besides bureaucrats, said Sarma, adding that local representatives can be part of the committee.
Second members of the panel will visit the site, interact with members of civil society and complete discussions within 30 days.
Five aspects, which must be considered to resolve disputes, are historical evidence, ethnicity, administrative ease, mood and sentiment of the people concerned and land plains, Sangma said.
“In principle, we will try to find a solution in the framework of these five aspects”, he said.
The six disputed sites were taken in the first phase of Tarabari, Gijang, Phalia, Baklapara, Pilorkata and Khanapara.
These areas fell in Cachar, Kecatrupup Metro and Kumrup in rural districts in Assam and West Khasi Hills, RI Bhoi and Bukit Jaintia Timur in Meghalaya.
