Assam still Covid vulnerable with daily 2,000 cases

GUWAHATI: With more than 2,000 cases still being reported daily, the road to Covid recovery is still about three weeks away if compared to Delhi.
Health experts said the number of new cases has been static in the last few days.
“There is a decreasing trend in Covid cases if we analyze the scenario since April when the Covid graph started shooting up.
But one has to keep in mind that a comparatively smaller state like Assam is adding 2,000 to 3,000 cases daily to the all India figure of around 50,000.
It can be concluded that Assam is not on the safe side,” a senior health official said.
Going by the current trend, he said, the state’s daily positive cases may dip below 2,000 by June 30 and by July 15, it can come down to 1,000 per day.
The biggest worry, however, is the ‘changing pattern’ of the virus infection.
“The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, which covers state capital Guwahati, was showing the highest number of cases in the last 10 days.
But now, it has been surpassed by rural districts.
This is the biggest worry at this hour,” he said, adding that the situation in Sonitpur, Golaghat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia is a bigger concern than the city.
Assam logged 2,728 new cases on Wednesday at a positivity rate of 1.64% after 1.66 lakh tests.
This was a marginal improvement compared to 2,869 positive cases detected the previous day when the positivity rate was 1.88%.
Kamrup (Metropolitan) district had 187 positive cases in the last 24 hours, which the health officials said are under control.
The number of Covid deaths was 30 on Wednesday, while the recovery rate was 92.63%.
“In the third week of May, we were having about 5,500 cases per day but now it has come down to around 3,000.
We still have a long way to go,” said Assam NHM director, Lakshmanan S.
Even though there has not been a drastic fall in the number of cases in the districts where more cases are being reported, the major concern has been the possibility of lockdown-like measures in some of the districts after Thursday’s cabinet meeting.
Government sources told TOI that considering the financial hardships faced by the poor and business community, the state cabinet may go for only micro level containment measures.
“There may be stricter restrictions in select blocks and at the panchayat level in the districts from where a higher number of cases is still being reported.
But total lockdown in all vulnerable districts is unlikely,” said a senior government official.
