‘Assam to frame new coal policies’

Silchar: Cabinet Minister Assam Jogen Mohan and Bimal Borah heard the views of stakeholders to formulate policies to facilitate coal imports in various Valley barak industries and export of betel nuts.
Taking part in the meeting, the two ministers said the policy would be formulated to facilitate coal imports from Barak Valley by protecting all the interests.
Uday Shankar Goswami, on behalf of the Brick Kiln industry, said 400 metric tons of coal is needed to produce 1.5 million bricks a year in each of the 100 brick fields in Cachar District.
He also said brick kiln needed coal from November to February.
On behalf of the tea planter, it was stated that 25,000 metric tons of coal was needed for 57 tea gardens in Cachar District.
Sirih farmers also propose to formulate policies to facilitate betel exports outside the valley.
