Guwahati: Assam last year recorded 3,243 suicide, an average of 8.88 every day, which was an increase of 36.8% compared to the previous year.
More than 50% of those who take their lives are unemployed and producer of daily wages, according to the latest data from the center.
A total of 974 unemployed people and 789 daily wage recipients died of suicide during the pandemic-hit locking period contributed more than 54% of the total victims of suicide in the state in 2020, the report showed.
Of the 3,243 suicide, 2,337 was male and 906 women, he added.
Although the report did not mention Covid and lock because of possible reasons for an increase in suicide, a 2020-sponsored study of the Government Assam had predicted that almost half of the country’s population could be pushed into poverty if the country’s unemployment crisis increased the state unemployment.

Assam also saw 10 cases of mass or family suicide where 10 people lost their lives.
The suicide rate (per lakh population) also increased from 6.9 in 2019 to 9.3 years ago, NCRB, which functions under the Interior Ministry (MHA), was stated on Thursday.
The national average tariff is 11.3.
Mental health experts believe suicide among children and adolescents increases due to unsafe attachments and emotional termination with parents, friends and family.
“Stress on the work prospects, unemployment and financial inequality can cause many people to take extreme steps,” they said, and added that experts expect an increase in suicide because of the situation arising from Covid-19.
“Unemployment, stress related covid and financial recession have produced depression and suicide.
The other main problem is to post Covid depression,” they said.
A total of 2,011 people, whose annual income is less than Rs 1 lakh and 998 others, which produces RS 1 lakh and above but less than Rs 5 Lakh, suicide.
This report shows that the total number of people who died, 673 did not have education and 505 had learned to class V.
