Assam’s Sali Farmers smiled even though rainfall deficits

Guwahati: Rainfall Deficits, which caused concerns to extend this rainy season, have failed to block the spirit of farmers actively involved in the Sali-sowing plant that sowed Assam.
This country produces highest rice among northeastern countries and is famous for its rich rice genetic diversity.
Data on Economic Directorate and Statistics Assam stated that in 2019-20, around 81.21 lakh metric tons (81,21,528) rice was produced in the state.
From this, the main shares are Sali Padi, which contributed around 61.47 lakh metric tons (61.47,518).
It accounts for around 75 percent of the total asssam rice production.
Remote estimates IMD from Monsun 2021 suggested that Northeast India is expected to get rainfall below normal during this rainy season (between June and September) less than 95 percent of the long period.
In the past two months since the arrival of the Monsun, the deficit has been clearly visible, showing 23 percent of rainfall deficits in Assam until last week.
Even when Assam was among the five countries to experience rainfall with Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland, local rainfall had showered blessings during the sowing season, officials said at the State Department of Agriculture.
“Local rainfall helped sow Sali Rice, despite the widespread rainfall of the lack of monsoon.
Even though there was a little rain, there was no major flooding that destroyed the entire country.
That’s why sowing Sali rice, like on Wednesday, finished at 11 lakh hectares Land in Assam.
This is a pretty good progress compared to last year, “said Pankajnabh Das, Assistant Director (Agricultural Information) in the Ministry of Agriculture Assam.
At the same time last year, Sali Paddy was planted in the hectare of 9 lakh.
Last year, Sali Paddy was cultivated at 18.78 lakh hectares of land in the state.
While in most parts of sowing the country has been completed, the temporary estimation of the Directorate of Economic and Statistics said in 2020-21, the production of Sali will increase to 61.02,845 metric tons.
Associate Professor at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Rajib Lochan Deka, said, “Sali’s newly transplanted rice plants suffered from situations such as drought in most Assam District during July.
But the situation of rainfall has increased a lot in the state for the first two weeks of August Except in Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar and Dima District.
“Cumulative rainfall of the wise district (from June 1 to August 15) was found less in Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dhubri, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Udalguri, Nagaon, Morigaon, Carriage Anglong, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
The overall rainfall scenario in this rainy season, until August 15, is said to be 20 percent.
In June, excessive rainfall in five Assam Regency, normal in 12 districts and less in nine districts from 27 old districts.
The overall rainfall scenario in the state as a whole during the normal June with the departure of the long-term average rainfall is -9 percent.
In July, normal rainfall in seven districts and less in 20 districts.
As a result, the overall rainfall scenario in the less state and departure is -37 percent during July.
This rice reconctions season is a difficult time for farmers but occasionally rain has saved them.
As a good amount of rain has destroyed the upper Assam region in the past few days, Ananda Pegu, a farmer in Majuli District said they prayed to the gods so that last minute flooding did not damage their newly rooted plants.
“When we needed more rain last month, nothing.
But in the last few days, rainfall had been heavy,” Ananda said.
Outlook Weather IMD has more rain on cards until August 26 in the northeast, which can cause the flood situation in Assam.
Nearly 8,000 people and 377 hectares crossed Bongaigaon, Chirang Regency and Dibrugarh in the state were influenced by flooding in the state earlier this week.
Between 20 and 26 August, cumulative weekly rainfall activities are likely to be more than the “above normal” category in most Pradesh Arunachal, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagalandion, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura meteorological subdivisions.
