LONDON: Founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange on Monday was given the opportunity to challenge the decision that enabled him to be extradited to the United States to face 18 criminal charges, including violating the law of the Mejasif, to the British Supreme Court.
The US authorities are looking for Assange born in Australia, 50, to face trials on 18 counts relating to the release of Wikileaks from the broad trove of the US military records and diplomatic cables they say have undergone danger.
In December, the High Court in London overturned a lower court decision that he should not be extradited because of his mental health problems meaning he would be at risk of suicide.
While the judges refused permission to him to appeal directly to the Supreme Court for their decision, they said the case caused a matter of legal interest that he could request a high court in the UK.
“The respondent’s application to declare the legal point is given,” said the court.
“The respondent’s application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court was rejected.” This means the Supreme Court must decide whether to hear the challenge or not.
