At Kabul airport, calm and resignation

New York: In the last hours on Monday the presence of the US military in Afghanistan, hoping to decrease among the Afghans who tried to escape the country through the International Airport in Kabul, the focus point of US evacuation efforts since the Taliban City took over last week.
When the US military ran towards Tuesday’s deadline to withdraw from the longest American war, sporadic violence has been reported in the last few days in Kabul, which underlined the future danger to the country.
While the scene of chaos has played at the airport for days, like thousands of people rushed out of the country, on Monday night, calm and resignation had fallen.
Several hundred people waited outside the airport perimeter, but guarded with significant distance by Taliban fighters guarding the area.
Some planes – mostly C-17, large military transport aircraft – take off and turn west to the sunset.
About 1,200 people have been flown from Kabul in the last 24 hours, the White House said Monday morning.
Combat jets and drones can be seen overhead circling.
Taliban fighters say they are preparing the possibility that American troops can go at the end of the day, hours before the deadline.
Thousands of Afghans who expect the way out of the country to face the fact that they could not find one before the withdrawal ended.
One former translator for US special forces, who asked to be identified only with his nickname, Mike, had approval for special immigrant visas, but could not enter the airport.
“I’m still in Kabul and I don’t know what to do,” Mike said in a telephone interview.
He described the frustration knowing that many others have gone without the same documentation, and his fears to return to a village where everyone knows he works for Americans.
“We wake up at night and think about what will happen to our lives and for our children,” he said.
