Qala-e-Naw: At least 12 people were killed and many others were injured after a magnitude of 5.6 earthquakes hit the western Badghis Province of Afghanistan on Monday, a local official said.
“The most devastated area is the Badruk area, Darband-e-Safed and Khak Polak in the Qadis district, east of the capital city of Qala-e-NAW,” Xinhua news agency quoted Mohammad Saleh District Head Purdil.
Some houses were influenced by the earthquake that occurred at 4:10 a.m., and the number of victims might rise, the source said.
The US geological survey said the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 jerked 40 km east of Qala-e-Naw, the capital of Badghis Province which borders Turkmenistan.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was originally determined at 34.9479 degrees of North Latitude and 63.5686 degrees east longitude, he said.
Some aftershocks were also felt in the region.
