New Delhi: At least 26 Maois was shot down on Saturday during a meeting with police in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, PTI reported quoting senior officials.
The meeting, which began in the Kotgul-Gyataapatti forest in early Saturday, was carried out by the C-60 command of the police and late at night.
“We have recovered 26 Maoists’ bodies so far from the forest,” said the district supervisor of Ankit Goyal police.
While the police have not confirmed the killed identity of Maoist, the source said that a top rebel leader was among those who were killed in a shootout.
Four police personnel were also seriously injured in the action and were taken to Nagpur by helicopters for treatment, the previous official said.
The previous source told Ti that security forces restored weapons and other materials from the meeting place.
Massive plating operations are being carried out to detect more bodies of extremists.
