At Rs 16 crore/dose, 3 Children get world’s Lightest Medication

BENGALURU: Three women aged under two that suffer from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare hereditary disease brought on by the lack of neural cells from the spinal cord, have a fresh lease of life with all the world’s lightest medication.
The children — from Bengaluru and 2 out of Hyderabad — were selected through a lottery program from pharma major Novartis for Zolgensma, a medication costing Rs 16 crore each dose.
The single-dose shot given for chemical treatment is thought to be effective in treating the problem.
The 3 women had been administered the dose on Thursday night in Bangalore Baptist Hospital.
The youngsters were all the lucky winners of this lottery performed via a compassionate entry programme by Novartis, the drug maker.
The hospital also received the consignment on June 16 by the usa.
“This medication has to be kept at freezing temperatures and therefore, it had been delivered on dry icehockey,” explained Dr Madhuri Maganthi, head of division and paediatric geneticist, Bangalore Baptist Hospital.
SMA is caused by the lack of neural cells, which transmit electrical signals in the brain to the muscles.
“The protein required for the signalling is coded by a receptor where everybody has two copies — one by your mom and the other in your father.
A youngster develops SMA only if the duplicates are not faulty.
With no treatment, this disorder is deadly,” explained Dr Maganthi.
In the Centre for Neuromuscular Meeting in Baptist, five’ve the medication so much and two from Bengaluru will soon be getting it soon.
The group headed by Immigration pro Dr Ann Agnes Mathew and also Dr Maganthi was able to make an application for the medication with the maker even through the pandemic.
Before, a three-year-old Hyderabad boy Ayaansh Gupta, struggling with SMA had been administered that the Rs 16-crore shooter, thanks to more than 62,400 individuals donating Rs 14.84 crore towards his remedy via a crowdfunding website.
The rest of the Rs 1.2 crore came out of an worldwide crowdfunding initiative along with also the boy’s household.
