Athletic Stadium to be named after Milkha Singh, said Goa CM Pramod Sawant

Panaji: Less than a week after the Minister of Pramod Chair Sawant announced that the Hockey Stadium in Peddem in Mapusa will be named after Dhyan Chand, the name for the athletic stadium in Bambolim has also been completed.
“We will name the athletic stadium in Bambolim after flying Sikh Milkha Singh,” Sawant said during the function to submit a cash award for family sportsmen on Friday.
Milkha Singh, one of the largest athletes in India, skipped a bronze medal during the 1960 Olympics held in Rome.
He died of Covid-19 complications in June this year.
Inaugurated in 2014 for Lusofonia games, the venue was not officially named but often referred to as the GMC Athletics Stadium.
Some matches from the League Super League (ISL) last season were played here.
Another place built for Lusofonia games and national games that are delayed are waiting to be named.
“We will consider naming the stadium after Goan’s sportsmen who have contributed for years,” Sawant said.
“The names of Leo Pinto, Walter D’Souza and Mary D’Souza are being considered for the unnamed stadium.
This is the right time to do it.
We celebrate 60 years of Goa Liberation and we have to advance in all fields.” While Leo Pinto and Walter D’Souza are part of the Indian gold medal winning team at the 1948 London Olympics, Mary D’Souza is one of the first Indian women to compete in the Olympics.
He won a gold, silver and bronze medal at the Asian Games in Delhi (1951) and in Game Manila in 1954.
Sawant also announced that the state government will soon sign a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Sports Authority (SAI) for the center.
Excellence at Campal.
The center will serve table tennis, badminton and swimming.
The annual budget of RS 3 Crore has been intended.
“In Dhargal, we have 100 hectares of land.
We want to make a sports city there.
Because of the pandemic, we can’t move forward with our plans.
But our vision is to have a sports city.
Land has been booked and in 2023 we must have an academy for Sports with the best facilities, “Sawant said.
