Melbourne: Australian officials on Sunday said no need to clamp the Christmas celebration even when the new Covid-19 infection rose in Sydney, with a high level of vaccination in the country made people get out of the hospital.
Health Minister Greg Hunt said he believed Australia did not need to follow the Netherlands, who had brushed up strict locking during the period of Christmas and New Year to curb the spread of an omicron variant which was very contagious.
“We will go to the summer, we have one of the highest level of vaccination in the world and a series of very different situations.
So we don’t see it is a possible situation in Australia,” Hunt told reporters at a media conference broadcast on television.
The Netherlands, he said, has suffered infections and deaths that are far higher than Australia for a pandemic and are now in the winter depth when cases are more likely to rise sharply.
“We are ready and extraordinary people …
continue to do extraordinary work,” Hunt said, referring to more than 90% of Australians more than 16 which had been fully vaccinated.
Australia’s most populous state of the population, New South Wales, on Sunday reported 2,566 new cases, up from 2,482 on Saturday.
Cases in intensive care remain low at the age of 28, which states the dominic protttet premiere is “very positive.” Pressed by reporters about whether the country was complacent in the face of installation cases, Perrottet said the key metric was the number of cases in intensive care.
“It’s time to calm down.
But it’s also an important time to get out and take your booster’s shot, because vaccination has become the key to the success of New South Wales,” he said.
In the state of Victoria, a new infection fell to 1,240 on Sundays from 1,504 the day before, with 81 cases in intensive care.
Tasmania reported three new cases.
Health officials said it was unclear whatever split between Omicron and Delta cases among Australian new infections.
Australia has had far better than other countries in the pandemic after turning off its border in March 2020, with around 247,000 total cases and 2,142 deaths.
