Tokyo: The city of Australia Brisbane will host the 2032 Summer Olympics, after the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday approved the recommendation of the Executive Board.
Brisbane, where hundreds of people gathered on the South Bank River to watch the IOC session on the big screen erupted in cheering, became the third Australian city to get the game after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
“This is a historic day not only for Brisbane and Queensland, but for the whole country, “said Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
“Only global cities can secure the Olympics – so this is right for Brisbane standing throughout our region and the world.” The capital of Queensland State is the preferred host, chosen in February, and has received a nod of the executive board last month.
The choice means Australia only becomes the second country in the world, after the United States, to hold a summer Olympics in three different cities.
“It also marks important leaps for Australia when we see large events that lock economic growth and social benefits that will echo for years to come,” Morrison said.
Some cities and countries have openly expressed interest in staging 2032 matches including Indonesia, the capital of Hungary Budapest, China, Doha Qatar and the German Ruhr Valley.
But in the new process adopted by IOC which did not openly circled the candidate against each other, Brisbane had moved ahead of rival back in February, has been chosen as the “preferred host”.
Great praise “Olympics in Brisbane will be in the hands of the most diligent, grateful and enthusiastic,” said the head of the Australian Olympic Committee John Coates, who was the Vice President of IOC.
“And I made this commitment to world athletes – we will give you an unforgettable experience.” City offers have received repeated praise from IOC for a high percentage of existing places, support from all levels of government and the private sector, experience in organizing great events and beneficial weather, among others.
The commitment in April from the Australian Government to divide the 50-50 infrastructure with local governments increasingly increases its chances.
The Queensland state organizes the 2018 Commonwealth game.
Giving a game to Australia is also a nod for the Coat of senior IOC members, and one of the closest allies to the IOC President Thomas Bach.
Coates, which reached the age limit of IOC 74 in 2024 and would be forced to leave the organization, failed to try to land the 1992 match for Brisbane which was finally given to Barcelona.
IOC overhauled the bidding rules in 2019 to reduce costs and make the process easier for the city.
There is no official city candidate who campaigned ahead of the vote as well as in the past.
Instead, the IOC chose the preferred host after talking to all the attracted cities and then put the city into the vote in the session.
Tokyo accommodates the 2020 Olympics which was postponed this week and Paris would hold 2024 matches.
Los Angeles has been awarded the 2028 summer Olympics.
