New Delhi: The Afghan team will have a new bat coach in the former Sri Lanka player Avisawardene, a grateful cricket board announced on Tuesday in the midst of fresh turmoil at home after takeover by the Taliban.
The Afghan cricket board confirmed the development in the official Twitter handle.
“Former Batsman and coach @OfficialsClc, Avishka Gunawardene has been appointed as a coach of the Afghan national team batting,” Afghan board tweeted.
In an international career that stretched almost a decade, Gunawardene represents Sri Lanka in 6 tests and 61 ODIS.
While he only numbered 181 running in a cricket test, Gunawardene made 1708 running in ODI format with a century.
The International Cricket Council in May said the Independent Court cleared Gunawardene from two corruption charges, which allowed it to take part in activities related to cricket.
The next Afghanistan is scheduled to play 3 odi against Pakistan in Sri Lanka next month.
Taliban fighters who took over Afghanistan on Monday have announced that cricket can continue as before.
Previously, the former Australian Fast Bowler Shaun Tait was appointed as coach of the Afghan National Bowling team.
