Pune: The sharp increase in Dengue cases in Pune has caused panic that extends from falling platelet counts, often leading to unworthy platelet transfusions, so that reminiscent of paranoia for remedies during the second covid wave.
Normal people have platelet counts range from 1.50,000 and 4.50,000 per microlete of the blood.
About 80-90% of patients with dengue fever will have a level below 1.00,000, while 10-20% of patients will see a level of 20,000 which is critically low or less.
However, only about 5% of dengue fever patients face complications, such as bleeding, which requires platelet transfusions.
“The platelet transfusion with the lack of bleeding does not prevent bleeding.
Such practices are associated with slower platelet recovery and a long increase in hospitalization,” experts have warned.
Head of Chairperson of Ruby Hall Clinic Kapil Zirpe suggested strict inspection on sales and use using blood platelet bags in the blood bank and hospital to stop the undue blood transfusion.
“I feel there is an urgent need to audit the use of blood platelet transfusions among dengue fever patients in Pune.
District administration or public health officials must step up to limit the use of blood products.” Sharing views, head intensive Mangeshkar hospital Deenanath Prasad Rajhans said, “With Supportive care, most patients with very low platelet counts will recover after a few days.
” He said, “The platelet transfusion with the absence of adult dengue bleeding with a platelet number of less than 20,000 per microliter does not reduce bleeding opportunities and accelerate platelet recovery.
Instead, this practice is associated with slower platelet recovery and increasing hospitalization,” Rajhans said.
Conversely, the transfusion of blood products can harm patients because it can bring the risk of excess fluid, transmitting transmission of infectious diseases, and a side reaction that is transfused by transfuse.
