Mumbai: BMC has included a Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in vaccination schedules for babies.
It is known to protect babies against pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases.
“This vaccine will be free in hospitals and clinics for children under one year dose.
Two primary doses will be given at the age of six weeks and 14 weeks, and one dose of booster in nine months.
“As part of preparation, training is delivered.
Settings are also made for vaccine distribution, syringes and other supplies,” he added.
In India, pneumococcal disease killed around 1 lakh of children under the age of five in 2010.
In the same year, 5-6 lakh children were diagnosed with pneumonia.
