Mumbai: For the third week in a row, people who live around Lake Bandra gather on Sunday morning to clean the water.
Flotsam they took the weight of more than 50kg which are a variety of empty alcohol bottles, plastic, dead fish found floating in water and scattered around the lake.
Lake, better known as Bandra Talao, is an oasis in the midst of the concrete maze.
The inheritance structure, it was sandwiched between SV Road and The Bandra Railway Station Road.
BMC did do some beauty work a few years ago but many things returned to Square One, said Gauri Kulkarni (26) involved in the cleaning drive over the past three weeks.
“There is no lighting or fence right around the edges of the body of the body.
Narcotics addicts lurking around that place, making it insecure,” said Kulkarni who underwent a stone’s throw from the lake.
He said they planned to tidy up the place until BMC appointed his cleaning staff for the maintenance of the lake.
Mushtaq Ansari, another volunteer who also joined the cleaning, said they had created the WhatsApp group named #ChakachaBandratalav.
“Last year, the lake was a popular tourist spot,” he recalled.
“But now, his condition has deteriorated with garbage around.” Between 2016 and 2019, the Civic body has done some beauty working along Talao.
BMC has also taken a comparison of lakes in phases.
Locals claim that every time they try to prevent people from illegal activities around Talao, they are threatened.
Like, Dr.
Shantaram Kerkar, Bandraiite.
“I see fishing happens here even though it’s not permitted.
Also, Merpati is fed around the lake,” said Dr.
Kerkar.
“When I have faced people, I have faced threats.” Bandra Corporator Asif Zakaria said that following several complaints from residents, this problem was discussed at the Ward Civic Committee meeting last week.
“BMC is struggling to maintain bandra talao.
This results in a lack of aeration against water because of the formation of algae that occur, causing water to turn green,” Zakaria said.
“The road to the future can change Talao as a water sports hub to sail, kayak, boating and turn it into a tourist spot.”
