New Delhi: Police Bangladesh said on Tuesday that 450 people had been arrested in the majority of Muslims after attacks on Hindus in some of the worst riots for more than a decade.
At least six people have died, local media reported, because the police had struggled to hold an angry horde.
Violence began on Friday when hundreds of Muslims protested in Southeast Noeakhali Regency accused Hindus from blasphemous incidents involving the Qur’an.
Some Hindu religious sites have been damaged, and the house attacked.
The authorities have submitted 71 cases in connection with violence during the Hindu Festival Durga Puja, said a spokesman for the Bangladesh police.
The investigation was underway after the arrest of 450 suspected the perpetrators, he added.
Communal tensions have long boiled in Bangladesh, whose constitutionally establishes Islam as a state religion but also upholds the principle of secularism.
Hindu redeem about 10% of the population.
His riots were one of the worst in Bangladesh since the Prime Minister Sheikh League Party Hasina in power in 2009.
“Recent attacks on Hindu Bangladesh, driven by hatred speech on social media, opposed the values of the constitution and need to stop,” Tweeted Mia SPPO, UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh.
The Amnesty International Rights Group called for investigations and punishment for the perpetrators.
