Bengaluru: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) collected Hospital 3.4 Crore as a penalty for violations of solid waste management in 2021.
They included removing mixed waste, throwing garbage in open areas and did not separate dirt.
Even though Bengaluru pocketed the Swachh City Award in the Swayachh Survekshan 2021 survey, the city reported more than 1.3 violations of SWM Lakh.
Documents with BBMP accessed by Toi revealed that the southern zone contributed the highest (48,513) from the violation, followed by the East Zone (41,698).
“Some areas such as Sudhamnagar, Sapenahalli and Banashankari constantly disposed of mixed waste.
People in this zone are often caught throwing dirt on vacant land,” said a senior marshal from the South Zone.
Another Marshal of the East Zone said: “Manorayanapalya, KavalbyRasandra, HBR layout, Bharathinagar and Ulsoor are among areas where people do not separate waste, while in areas such as Domlur, Jeevanbima Nagar and Kadugondanahalli, technicians and office visitors tend to throw garbage On the site empty and open the water channel, especially at night, in Sly.
“Among other related violations, the city recorded 8,412 incidents of spit in public places and a penalty of Rs 8.5 lakh recovered from violators.
Maternal officials regret that actions such as spitting in public continues, even though this city is in the grip of the third wave and civil group Covid-19 has campaigned against it.
“Radhakrishna Temple Ward, Manorayanapalya, JC Nagar, SK Garden, Lingarajapon, Marutiseva Nagar, Kacharakanahalli and Konena Agrahara are several other areas where spitting cases increase,” Marshal added.
“Previously, there were posters prepared about enforcing masks, social breaks, hand hygiene and spitting, but enforcement must be intensified,” said Odette Kidrak, a beautiful founder of Bharat, who advocated the national mission to be banned.
“It is interesting to see that 8,000 people have been convicted of spitting in public.
This shows BBMP taking serious steps to prohibit this threat,” Krak said.
Colonel Rajbhir Singh, the head of the marshal, however, said that hard action against spit was a difficult task.
“This is a split-second activity and is very difficult to catch the perpetrators in action,” he said.
According to the document, 2,813 people were convicted of urinating in public and 1,400 to defecate.
Harish Kumar, Special Commissioner (SWM), BBMP said collaboration between Marshal and a group of residents in all cities had helped spread awareness about waste management.
Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner, SWM, said the biggest achievement for years was a reduction in plastic use.
“Joint meetings are held with senior health supervisors and we told them to punish anyone who uses plastic to completely stop their use,” Khan said.
“The use of plastic has dropped dramatically, but must stop completely.
People need to understand the importance of not disposing of mixed waste, not spitting and urinating in public …” Kumar added.
