BBMP seems to spend a lot of money on maintenance of lakes, but is not interested in overseeing the work of the contractor, even when the lake’s condition worsens
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has spent Lakh rupees for lake maintenance in the city, but given the sad state of several waterbodies, no one shows expenses.
Residents around the lake said that BBMP was not interested in the lake maintenance supervisor.
They said the authorities only chose the contractor to defend the lake, but do not check whether the contractor maintained well or not.
To illustrate: The Lake Department of Lake BBMP spent Rs 2,77,335 for maintenance of Lake Mallahahalli in 2016-17 and there was no amount in 2017-18, and the amount for maintenance of Lake Mallahahalli increased 10 times at Rs 10,40,035 in 2018 -19, RS 11.98 .390 in 2019-20 and Rs 8.55,525 at 2020-21.
Over the past three years, the contractor has become the same person – Shivanna.
It was Narasimharaju Mariyappa in 2016-17.
Surprising is a five-fold increase in maintenance costs in four years.

“I visited Mallahahalli Lake a few months ago.
I found no workers involved in the maintenance of the lake.

Revealing a surprise for the BBMP claim that Rs 41.19,795 was spent on maintenance of Halasuru Lake, V Pura-Shotham, a member of Halasuru Rising, said he had never found any work done by BBMP on the lake.
“Half of the lake, including the islands, managed by Madras Engineer Group (MEG).
Other parts of the lake, especially walking and lake beds, managed by the Prestige group,” said Purushotham.
BBMP Chief Engineer (Lakes) Mohan Krishna said that labor wages were the main component in expenditure towards the maintenance of the lake.
“We need a minimum of four workers for lake maintenance.
We have to pay a minimum of Rs 500 per day for each worker.
Other costs for removing mud from the waterways that carry water to the lake and eliminate hyacinth and weeds.
