Helena: Grizzly Bear pulled a woman from her tent in a small Montana city in the middle of the night and killed her before fellow campers could use a bear spray to force Bruin out of the area, said wildlife officials Wednesday.
Leah Davis Lokan, 65, from Chico, California, was on a long distance cycling trip and stopped in the West Montana city of Ovando when he was killed on early Tuesday, said Montana Fish officials, Wildlife and Parks because they provided more details about the attack.
The locations were killed on the visit of the two bears to the site where he and two fellow cyclists camped near the post office, officials said.
About 400 pounds (181 kilograms) Grizzly first raised camping around 3am, officials said.
They took out food from their tents, securing it and returned to sleep, they said.
Video supervision from business in the city shows bears about blocks from the post office about 15 minutes later, said wildlife officials.
Around 4:15 a.m., the Sheriff’s office received a 911 call after two in the tent near the victim was awakened by the sound of the attack, said Powell County Sheriff Gavin Roselles.
They took out their bear sprays, and the bear escaped.
The bear was also believed to have entered a chicken coop in the city that night, kill and eat some chickens.
Officials sought by helicopters for Grizzly again Wednesday but could not find it.
“At this point, our best chance to catch this bear will be a trap of culvises located in the area near the chicken coop where the bear killed and eat some chicken,” said Randy Arnold, Montana Fish, Missoula area supervisor.
Bears will be killed if found, said Greg Lemon, spokesman for fish, wildlife, and parks.
Investigators have obtained DNA from the bear in the attack site and will be able to compare it with whatever Bruin they can trap, the agency said.
Lokan, a registered nurse who has worked in a hospital in Chico, has been looking forward to Montana’s bicycle trip for months, said Mary Flowers, a friend of victims from Chico.
The location has taken a long distance bike trip before and this one was accompanied by his sister and a friend, said Flowers.
“He likes this kind of adventure.
A woman in her 60s, and she did this kind of things – she had an extraordinary lifetime desire,” Flowers said.
Grizzly bear has experienced an increase in conflict with humans in North Rockies over the past decade when animals protected by the federal government are extended to new areas and the number of people living and recroses in the region.
It has spurred calls from selected officials in Montana and neighboring Wyoming and Idaho to raise protection so that animals can be hunted.
Ovando, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) Northwest of Helena, is a community of less than 100 people on the edge of Bob Marshall Wilderness.
North Ovando lies with a stretch of forest and mountains, including the Glacier National Park that stretches to Canada and is home to an estimated 1,000 grizzlies.
This is the biggest concentration of Bruin in a fatal attack A.S.
Adekapanlahan is rare in the region.
There are three in the last 20 years, including Mauling Tuesday, according to US fish and wildlife services.
In 2001, a hunter was killed by Grizzly with two children when he destroyed the deer in the wildlife management area in the west of Ovando.
The three animals were shot and killed by wildlife officials a few days later.
Over the past 20 years, there were eight fatal paiwa people by the Grizzlies of a separate population of around 700 bears in and around Yellowstone National Park.
In April, a backcountry guide was killed by Grizzly Bear while fishing along the garden border in Southwest Montana.
Bear that attacking people are not always killed if Mauling is produced from a surprise or bear meeting it maintains it.
But the bear involved in the lokan death was considered a threat of public safety because of the state of the attack, said Lemon.
