Brussels: Belgian Secretary for asylum and migration, Sammy Mahdi, said on Monday that his country would not be deported by asylum seekers who failed to return to Afghanistan after the Taliban controlled the country.
“Individual valuation of each [asylum] request shows that the situation in Afghanistan is terrible and you cannot send anyone back,” Mahdi told Public broadcasters VRT.
Mahdi said Belgium would not pass a blanket ban on repatriation to Afghanistan for studying each case separately.
Belgium rejected the call last week to impose a moratorium on deportation to Afghanistan after the EU countries stopped repatriation considering the deteriorating security situation in the Central Asian country.
