Bengaluru gets a new bone marrow transplant facility

Bengaluru: At least 120 children who suffer from thalassemia can expect to rent a new life every year, thanks to the new bone marrow transplant unit (BMT) inaugurated on Wednesday in Bengaluru.
Sankalp India Foundation, an NGO that helps regulate blood transfusions for thalassemia patients, especially during a pandemic, has now taken a leap by establishing a BMT and Lab center at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital.
The new 5.5-crore BMT unit is funded by DKMS, Deutsche KnochenmarkspenderDatei or the German bone marrow donor center.
Bone marrow transplant is the only permanent solution for thalassemia and one transplant procedure costs more than Rs 20 lakh.
Sankalp has set bone marrow transplants for 15 children.
Padmavati, a mother of a seven-year-old child who underwent a bone marrow transplant two years ago with the help of the Sankalp Foundation, said that this foundation helped the end of the year of illness and suffering for my son.
He was diagnosed with thalassemia at the age of one and since then arrived The day he had a transplant, he was constantly entering and left the hospital for blood transfusions.

“He made a Covid-19 contract last year and we were worried, but he recovered well,” Padmavati said, who was present for the central launch.
While the patient’s family bears 10% of the costs, the remaining sponsored by Sankalp.

“We will be able to treat around 120 children in the center every year,” said Lalith Palmar, President, Indian SanKalp Foundation.
“With some of the best infrastructure along with a highly trained specialist team and an international visit consultant expert, will ensure that we provide the best clinical results for our patients.
This center, along with those in Ahmedabad, will take the total number of beds available for The 14th transplant, allowing us to move forward to achieve our goals from India that are free from thalassemia.
