Bengaluru: A 34-year-old man from Ballari who lost his hand in an electric accident in 2011 got a new pair of hands, thanks to the donor from Kerala.
Basavanna Gowda underwent a bilateral hand transplant surgery at the Kochi’s Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in September 2021.
Overcoming a press conference on Wednesday, the doctor from the Amrita Hospital explained about how generous decisions from the families of dead people resulted in Basavanna again.
Nevis Sajan Mathew, 25, from Kottayam Regency in Kerala, suffered pain and was declared dead on September 24, 2021.
He pursued his master in the French field and came to Kerala for a vacation when he fell ill and his condition deteriorated.
Nevis’s parents, Sajan Mathew and Sherin, agreed to donate their son’s organs, including his hands.
The next day, Basavanna underwent a hand transplant in a complex operation that lasted 14 hours.
In 2016, Basavanna visited the Amrita Hospital, which was known for a hand transplant.

In 2021, Basavanna signed up for a hand transplant and within six months she was grafted.
He was the ninth person to undergo bilateral corpse hand transplants at the hospital and the other two had undergone the same procedure afterwards.
Donor blood groups and recipients must match transplants, said the doctor.
Sajan Mathew, donor’s father, who sat next to Basavanna during the press direction, said when his son died after eight days of treatment in the ICU, they would be a rough surprise.
