Bharath Subramaniyam became the 73rd chess GM India

Chennai: Fourteen-year-old Bharath Subramaniyam on Sunday became the 73rd Grandmaster Chess in India, securing the third and last GM norm at an event in Italy.
Chennai-based player scored 6.5 points from nine rounds along with four others to complete the overall seventh in the event held in Cattolica.
He gained the third GM norm here and also touched the required 2,500 (ELO) sign.

Bharath finished with six wins and one draw while losing two matches – against Korobov and Lalith Babu.
Bharath reached his first GM norm after securing the 11th place in the Open Aeroflot in Moscow in February 2020.
He secured the second norm after placing the 4th in a junior tournament under 21 tournaments in Bulgaria with 6.5 points in October 2021.
To become GM, A The player must secure the three GM norms and cross directly 2,500 Elo points.
His coach M Shyam Sundar, a GM himself, greeted Subramaniyam and Tweeted: “Congratulations Bharath to become the latest Indian GM !! Let’s focus on new goals in this new year !!” Subramaniyam has become an international master at the age of 11 years and 8 months in 2019.
Mitrabha Guha has become the 72nd GM of the country in November, two days after Sankalp GM became the 71st GM.
