Bhubaneswar: In the largest cyber fraud reported in Odisha, Scamsters allegedly cheated by the former RS 95 lakh repair by luring him with a promise of high returns for the insurance policy that he bought online.
The 61-year-old retired defense officer, who lives in Bhubaneswar, filed a complaint with cyber cells from the branch of the State Crime in Cuttack on Monday.
The complainants have bought an insurance policy worth six lakh six in January 2011.
In August 2015, he received a series of calls from different people, who introduced themselves as a Reserve Bank of India functionary, National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), State Bank of India (SBI), Income Tax and Ministry of Finance.
All of them insisted that he paid a certain amount to liquidate the bonus of his policy agent.
When he tried to ask about bonus agents, which he had never heard of, fraudsters gave him some explanations he could not understand.
The source of branch crime the word converts convinced him again if he was deposited money.
Without the right verification, the former reparation fulfilled their request and began sending money to several accounts together by them.
“After each payment, virtual world villains called him again and asked him to pay against several other heads.
Surprisingly, the victim realized that he had been cheated after losing Rs 95 Lakh.
From August 2015 until recently, he has paid Rs 95 lakh for callers, “said a crime branch officer.
The police have registered a case below Section 419 (fraud by the imitation), 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for cheating purposes), 471 (using fake documents to become genuine), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (actions taken by several people with general intentions) from IPC and other relevant parts of the IT Law, 2000.
Insurance officers said there was no one called a bonus agent while liquidating policy.
“Both banks and insurance companies or RBI or other agencies call customers to deposit money towards any head.
Customers must either visit the nearest branch or contact the official agent / staff of the insurance company for clarification, “said Sagar Mohanty, an insurance manager.
