Bhubaneswar: Residents of the Capital City on Thursday allegedly violated the 8pm-10PM limit set by the government to explode firecrackers in Diwali, set fireworks well before and after scheduled time.
While Diwali last year in the middle of a pandemic saw almost no waste related to crackers, this year Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had to deal with a large number of garbage such as government norms only using green crackers.
The accumulation of waste gives testimony of facts how people have violated the norms and continues to explode.
Last year during Diwali (the first in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic), BMC does not have to deal with tons of additional waste a day after the festival as a sales and use of crackers is prohibited.
Apart from the examples of exploding crackers, the capital did not witness such activities in the middle of the pandemic as did in previous years.
“Since last year there was a ban on crackers, this city produced the usual city waste.
But this time, the waste was a little more because of crackers.
We haven’t measured the right difference in waste loads compared to normal days,” said Deputy Commissioner BMC Suvendu Sahu.
The BMC source said that even though the Odisha state pollution control agency (OSPCB) has not come out with post-diwali pollution levels, there are more pollution in the air around.
On normal days, BMC must handle around 600 metric tons of solid city waste produced from the city.
There must be an increase in 100 metric tons of waste for the BMC sanitation team on Friday, the source said.
“Because green crackers are permitted, people become satisfied and buy some cracker varieties of sources of Kllandia.
Last year, they could not celebrate and that was the reason why they were a little more enthusiastic this time,” said an BMC officer.
The additional Commissioner of BMC Laxmikanta Sethi said enforcement was carried out to regulate cracker sales.
“We have not received a special complaint of people who violate the sales norms of crackers.
However, it will be seen if people have violated the norms of time,” he said.
