Washington: President Joe Biden will briefly transfer power to Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday when he underwent a “routine colonoscopy” at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the White House said.
Biden drove early Friday to the medical center on the outskirts of Washington for his first routine physical exam as president.
Press Secretary Jen PSAKI said Biden would be under anesthesia during the procedure and will transfer power to Harris.
“As with President George W.
Bush has the same procedure in 2002 and 2007, and after the process stipulated in the constitution, the Biden President will transfer power to the vice president for a short period of time when he is under anesthesia.” He said.
“Vice-president will work from his office in West Wing so far.” Biden, 78, has the last full test in December 2019, when the doctor found a former vice-president being “healthy, strong” and “suitable to succeed in carrying out the presidential tasks,” according to a doctor’s report at that time.
Biden, who was 79 years old on Saturday was the oldest person who functions as president, and interest in his health has been high because he stated his nomination for the White House in 2019.
Dr.
Kevin O’Connor, who has become the main treatment of Biden.
Doctors since 2009, wrote in a three-page record that the presidential candidate was later in a good overall condition.
In the report, O’Connor said that since 2003, Biden has an atrial fibrillation episode, a type of irregular heartbeat that has the potential to be serious but can be treated.
At that time, O’Connor quoted a list of tests that showed Biden’s heart functioning normally and only the necessary treatment was a thinner blood to prevent the most worrying risk, blood clots or stroke.
Biden has a brush with death in 1988, which requires surgery to repair two brain aneurysms, weak bulges in the arteries, one of them leaked.
Biden never had a relapse, the doctor said, quoting the test in 2014 that examined his arteries.
Based on the 25th of the Constitutional Amendment, Biden will sign a letter to the Tempore Pro Senate President and the speaker from the House of Representatives said he could not carry out his duties while under anesthesia, made Harris president acting, and would send them another letter to the conclusion of the procedure to continue his tasks.
Harris, the first woman, the color and people of South Asian descent to become vice president, will make history during a short time he served as acting president.
He is scheduled to travel to Ohio then Friday after the Biden resume his tasks.
On Friday afternoon, Biden was scheduled to take part in forgiving the annual National Thanksgiving Turkey.
When Biden took the office he took O’Connor back to the White House to continue serving as a doctor, and O’Connor was expected to lead the team of experts in conducting a physical examination of Biden Friday.
After the Covid-19 pandemic appeared in early 2020, the Biden team took intensive steps to keep the candidates and now healthy presidents like viruses raged and to take unprotected tolls among older populations.
Biden received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccines in December 2020 and both doses were only two weeks before serving.
He received a booster dose, the regulator said providing more eternal protection, at the end of September.
The White House said Biden would authourise the release of medical reports, such as customs for the president and presidential candidate.
Former President Donald Trump, 75, has criticized sharply to release details only at a glance at his health while walking and serving in the White House, including hiding his seriousness Covid-19 a month before the 2020 presidential election.
