Washington: US President Joe Biden on Friday issued the first Proclamation of President of Indigenous Peoples, lending the most significant boost to efforts to focus on the federal holiday celebrating Christopher Columbus on the appreciation of the original society.
Biden also issued the Proclamation of Columbus’s Day on Monday, October 11, which was founded by Congress.
“For generation generations, federal policies systematically try to assimilate and displace indigenous people and eradicate genuine culture,” Biden wrote in the Proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day.
“Today, we recognize the resilience and strength of indigenous peoples and the not measurable positive impacts they make on every aspect of the American society.” In a separate proclamation on Columbus Day, Biden praised the role of Italian Americans in the US, but also referenced the violence and endangers Columbus and other explorers brought to America.
“Today, we also recognize the history of painful mistakes and atrocities caused by many European explorers in tribal countries and indigenous peoples,” Biden wrote.
“This is the size of our greatness as a nation that we don’t try to bury the embarrassing episode of our past – that we deal with it honestly, we bring them to light, and we can all overcome them.” This was the break from the defense of President Donald Trump who was vibrant “Intrepid Hero” like Columbus in 2020 holiday proclamation.
“Unfortunately, in recent years, radical activists tried to damage the Heritage of Christopher Columbus,” Trump said at the time.
“These extremists try to replace discussions about their extensive contribution with talks about failure, their discoveries with cruelty, and their achievements with violations.”
