WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden felt that India had to have a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Friday (local time).
“There are awards for our presidency from the UN Security Council, especially in Afghanistan issues.
President Joe Biden is very specific in stating that he feels India must have a permanent seat in the UN Security Council,” said the Secretary of the Foreign Secretary Vardhan Shringla.
At the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Biden.
He discussed a special press direction on the second day of PM Modi’s engagement during US visit.
India, one of the founding members of the World Body has been chosen as a non-permanent member of the council for 7 times during 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and the latest in 2011-2012.
UNSC consists of 15 members including 10 non-permanent members and 5 permanently.
193 UNSC members held elections every year to choose five non-permanent members for a period of two years at the United Nations.
Apart from this, there are five permanent members of the Council-China, France, Russia, England and the United States.
PM Modi and President Joe Biden on Friday held their first bilateral meeting since the latter assuming the office and discussed progress in relationships and problems related to trade, Covid-19, climate change and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
PM Modi, who met Biden at the Oval Office of the White House, said that in his remarks that the bilateral summit was important and the seeds had been sown for even stronger friendship between India and the US.
After a bilateral meeting, the Prime Minister said that Biden’s leadership on critical global problems was commendable and India and the US would work together to overcome the main challenges such as Covid-19 and climate change.
Since January, PM Modi and Biden have participated in three peaks.
Two of them were held by President Biden – Virtual Quad Summit in March and the climate change summit in April which was also held virtually.
PM Modi also virtually took part in the G7 summit held in Cornwall in England in June this year.
