Washington: President Joe Biden plans to meet with Cuban-American leaders on Friday in the White House to discuss protests against the communist government in Havana, sanctions on Cuban leaders and their efforts to provide internet access to the island.
The afternoon meeting came as a politically important community called for more support for the biggest populist that devoted the Havana government in decades.
Biden has promised additional sanctions on Cuban leaders, a step supported by many Cuban Americans.
The protest erupted this month in the midst of Cuban’s worst economic crisis since the fall of Ally the Soviet Union and a surge in the Coronavirus infection record.
Thousands have been taken to the streets, anger over the shortage of basic goods, curb civil liberties and handling the authorities of the authorities.
The 1.5 million American Cuban Florida strikes a lot for the Republican Party Donald Trump in the 2020 election, and getting their support is very important for the Biden Democratic Party to achieve a state of swing.
Last week, the US Ministry of Finance announced sanctions on Cuban Defense Minister and the Ministry of Interior’s Special Forces Unit on charges of violations of human rights in the harsh action of anti-government protests this month.
Biden said at that time that more sanctions would come against “individuals responsible for the suppression of Cuban people.” Republicans and Democrats at Capitol Hill said more are needed.
US Representative Kathy Castor, a Democrat Florida, wrote a letter to Biden earlier this week urged further sanctions “against the additional members of the Communist regime when we gather other countries to suppress democracy and human rights in Cuba.” Participants at Friday meetings must include: L.
Felice Gorordo, CEO, Emerge Americas, & Co-Founder, Root Hope; Yotuel Romero, Main singer Cuban Hip Hop Group Orisha and author of “Patria Y Vida” song that has become a hateful song; and Ana Sofia Pelaez, founder of the Miami Freedom project; And the former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz.
Biden and his team have tried to arrange internet access to Cuba, and consider the easing of the restrictions of Americans can send to their families in Cuba while preventing the Cuban government benefit.
“I think if Biden has a successful Cuban policy that is able to place a defensive regime and provide concrete support to Cuba, which will benefit it with voters in Florida,” said John Suarez, a human rights activist and executive director of the center for free Cuba.
“If the regime collapses on the watch, it can be a game-changer.” The Democratic National Committee launched a digital advertising campaign aimed at Cuban-American voters in South Florida earlier this week to defend Biden against criticism that he did not react quickly after protesting.
“DNC is committed to using our resources to speak directly to the Cuban community in South Florida to ensure they know that President Biden and Democrats have their backs,” said DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison.
