WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden will visit New York City next week to discuss fighting weapons crimes with Mayor Eric Adams during a meeting that will follow a recent fatal shooting of two city police officers.
The White House said Biden planned during the February 3 meeting to discuss the administration of the ‘comprehensive strategy “to fight weapons crime, including increasing funding for the city and the state to employ more police officers and pay for the prevention program and intervention of community violence.
This strategy also includes increasing the efforts of federal law enforcement of gun traders, the White House said.
Biden spoke with Adams by telephone on Monday night to offer condolences for the shooting two days ago of the two New York Police Department officers, White Press Secretary Jen PSAKI said this week.
Jason Rivera officers, 22, died at the night of the shooting.
His partner, Wilbert Mora, 27, was removed from living support on Tuesday, four days after the officers were seriously injured when they were called to Harlem’s apartment by a woman who said he needed help with adult sons.
Authorities said the man, Lashawn J.
McNeil, 47, opened the room door and shot the clerk when they walked along a narrow hall.
The third officer shot McNeil as he tried to escape.
McNeil died Monday.
To anticipate Biden’s visit, Adams said: ‘I hope to welcome Biden President to New York City next week and sit to discuss how we can work collaborably to end the scourge of the violence we see on the streets of New York City.
” In the last few days, the Houston Regional Contable Deputy was shot during the stop on the late late night traffic, and a Columbia police officer district was injured in a separate shooting.
PSAKI said the President told Adams, who had held offices less than a month, that he was committed to being a strong federal partner for New York City and other jurisdictions that have struggled with an increase in gun crime for the past two years.
Earlier this week, and only a few days after the two officers were shot, Adams announced a plan to arouse armor violence which included efforts to seize illegal weapons.
The mayor also wants the police department to use facial recognition and other technologies to identify people carrying weapons, expanding cash prizes for TipTers who share information about weapons related crimes and for the city to help businesses pay for installing cameras.
