Bihar: ‘It will take a long time to achieve dowry free status’

Patna: Patnaite has praised the charm of the Head of the Minister (CM) Nitish Kumar to prevent people from getting along with a dowry-based marriage.
‘Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan’ is ongoing, led by CM, including an anti-dowry campaign.
He begged people to print on invitation cards that their marriage was free from dowry and liquor.
He also stated that he would only attend a wedding where no dowry was taken.
Ragini Kesri, a government school teacher, told this newspaper that he wants an educated bride for his two sons, not dowry.
“Everyone realizes that Mahar is a bad thing, but the Groom family is still demanding it.
This is a kind of tradition now,” he said.
While the majority of people oppose the dowry system, some claim that it is now offered or received with the guise of “prizes”, which is actually synonymous with dowry.
They stated that there was still a long way before the system was completely eradicated from the wedding.
Sweta Kumari, a resident of Malsalami, shows that Mahar has evolved into a ritual form in the form of a gift.
“Marriage is an expensive affair, and the bride’s family usually serves the bride with a gift for at least RS 5-6 lakh,” he said, adding that it would take time to achieve dowry free status.
Hare Krishna Prasad (89), a resident of Patna City, stated that he was forced to sell land in his village to finance marriage from the three daughters.
He continued, “Dowry is a wrong practice, but our society is still very conservative.
It will take several more generations to free themselves.” Adarsh, a scholar student, said, “Despite the fact that illegal dowry, people continue to be involved .
Although the girls financially independent, marrying is still required in the form of expensive gifts such as a car, an apartment, or a piece of land.
There is an urgent need to speak to this trend.
“Deepak Kumar, another student, said that the dowry is still prevalent in society.
He said, “When a father gave a dowry through a loan, he believed that he had the right to demand a dowry at his son’s wedding.
We crave for change, but when we owe it, this desire is overwhelmed.”
