Patna: A police woman was killed and at least 15 other police personnel, including DSP Trainee, was injured when the grun of the IRAT attacked them at Jehanabad on Saturday to protest the alleged death of the custodian from a Govind Manjhi (25).
The incident occurred at the NH-110 near the Nehalpur Bazaar under the Bigha Paras Police Station area in the district where the police team went to put out a horde that had blocked the road in protest against the alleged death of Custodian Manjhi.
While the police said the woman was the police, Kanti Devi (54), was beaten to death, the sources claimed he was hit by a vehicle.
Kanti is a resident of Naubatpur in the Patna district.
Manjhi, a resident of Stata Village near Nehalpur Bazaar in Jehanabad District, allegedly died in Daudnagar’s sub-prison in Aurangabad on Friday night.
Daudnagar’s sub-prison had previously been a temporary prison for maintaining newly quarantined prisoners for 14 days.
Manjhi was arrested by Jehanabad police on July 19 because of his alleged involvement in smuggling liquor.
The Irate villagers also damaged police vehicles, including one of Jehanabad Sdpo Ashok Kumar Pandey, and blocked the highway by burning tires.
The source said the police fired at least three to four rounds in the air to disperse the hordes of violence after the situation slipped out of the hand.
Jehanabad Circle Inspector Bhavesh Kumar Mandal told Ti by telephone that the woman’s police died after she was beaten with the stem and stick by the villagers.
“At least 15 police personnel, including seven officers, were injured in violence.
The injured DSP was identified as Rajeev Ranjan, which was posted as a sho at the Bigha Paras Police Station,” he said.
Mandal also received an injury in the attack.
The circle inspector said the villagers demanded the compensation of RS 25 lakh along with government work for the next Kin from Manjhi.
“Protests began at around 8 in the morning.
When the police reached the place, the villagers began to throw stones.
They then attacked the police team with sticks and sticks,” Mandal said.
Jehanabad SP was peaked in Ranjan and other senior officers also rushed to the place to control the situation.
“Five people have so far been arrested in connection with violence,” SP said, added the police awaiting postmortem reports to ensure the reason for Manjhi’s death.
