Bihar: Unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions on Increase

PATNA: Covid-19 pandemic has hit girls challenging in regards to their reproductive health. The pandemic has contributed to increase in amount of unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion instances, placing health of women in danger. A research has also demonstrated that many girls had to undermine abortion because of the outbreak. City-based obstetricians and gynaecologists also stated some patients approached them later attempting dangerous abortions in the home. Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Arvind Hospital, Dr Neelam, stated the amount of these instances increased manifold during the ordeal. “We used to find such instances even prior to the pandemic. On the other hand, the amount increased during maternity,” Dr Neelam explained, including tablets such as terminating pregnancy are readily available at medication stores. “In the majority of instances, men purchase these pills out of medication shops without consulting physicians and provide the exact same to their husbands,” she added. Dr Neelam said instances of unplanned pregnancy also have increased as many couples are staying together because of the outbreak. “Utilization of other techniques to avoid pregnancy is considered a fantasy and male spouse doesn’t care for them,” she explained. Patna Menopause Society president Dr Usha Didwania warned people against esophageal maternity in the home without consulting physicians. She said in several instances, girls arrive at the hospital in critical condition after attempting abortion in the home. Dr Didwania stated she was able to receive four to five patients each week prior to the outbreak, but the amount has jumped by almost 25 percent. “In some instances, it was discovered that the egg got trapped in the tube and also the status of the girl worried turned serious following ingestion of anti inflammatory pills. The status of these patients becomes really severe if the tube pops,” Dr Didwania added. A nonprofit organisation had discovered in 2020 that almost 1.85 million girls couldn’t finish unwanted pregnancy at the first few months of their Covid-induced lockdown. Travel restrictions and attention of those hospitals on Covid attention have resulted in people attempting dangerous abortion.
