The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Chief Executive Katie Sadleir said the organizer was open to the idea of athletes carrying the flag of pride to the podium at the event next year in Birmingham.
“We will talk to athletes for the next six months to lead the match about what is possible or may not be visible but of course, we are open to it,” Sadleir told the BBC.
Speaking at the launch of the Commonwealth Sport Pride Network, an initiative aimed at bringing together athletes, coaches, and organizers of LGBTQ + from the Commonwealth Nations, Sadleir said CGF “really adheres to” freedom of expression athletes but added that it would refer to the code to hold.
“We have a code of ethics and there are some aspects of respect for other competitors and where you do what you do,” said Sadleir.
“From the perspective of advocates and freedom of expression, it is something we really embraced.” The 2022 Commonwealth Games is scheduled for July 28 to August 8.
