Abuja: United States Secretary Antony Blinken on Thursday condemned the previous daily murder of the Sudanese protesters in the most bloody violence since last month’s coup, urged the military to allow peaceful demonstrations.
“The military must respect the rights of civilians to gather peacefully and express their views,” said Blinken to a press conference in the capital of Nigeria Abuja, by saying he was “very concerned” by Wednesday’s bloodshed where 15 people died where 15 people died .
“We continue to support the demand for the Sudanese people for civilian-led transition recovery,” Blinken said, including the recovery of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
Apart from violence, US officials have voiced expected hopes about finding a way out of the crisis.
Molly Phee, US Top Diplomat for Africa, traveled earlier this week to Sudan where he met the Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan military authorities and Hamdok.
“Everyone, in my opinion, wants to find a way back, which is not the feeling I think you will go from outside,” said a senior official on the Blinken plane.
“There is plenty of space to find a way forward,” the official told reporters.
The official said that Burhan and Hamdok recognized the shortcomings in the Sudan Democratic transition, which began in 2019 when the military overthrew the old dictator Omar al-Bashir in facing massive youth protests.
