Bengaluru: Ramya Jawahar Kudekallu, 32, who was born and studied in Bengaluru, was appointed as Chair of the New York City Bar International Human Rights Committee for a three-year term.
Ramya, one of the youngest women and the first color to hold this post, was appointed on September 18.
He told the Toi: “Appointment is a great honor, but, together, indication that the New York City Bar, one of the largest lawyer associations in the US, means benefiting from diverse, multicultural and inclusive membership.” After going to school in Bengaluru , Ooty and Dubai, he studied the law in Bishop Cotton Women Christian College, Bengaluru and did his master in international law and human rights at Fordham University, New York.
He currently teaches at Cardozo Law School, New York.
“There are several committees in the bar that focuses on various aspects of the law.
This means a lot in this case because I have a long relationship with this field.
My role as chairman allowed me to guide and prioritize different human rights issues, advocacy approaches and Legal questions in my committee, “said Ramya.
Engaging in community services has been embedded by my family, said Ramya.
“I was taught not to ignore the problem of society and, more importantly, I have to reflect on my own role and privilege.
Learning in a legal college for women helps me better understand better gender lenses to law,” he said.
Ramya said he was happy to work with lawyers dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights globally besides ensuring that there were calls to act on these problems in the US.

Dr Amitha Malaki, currently living in Kushalnagar, Kodagu.
His father, Jawahar Kudekallu, an advocate who trained in Bengaluru, died in July.
“His father will be very proud of Ramya’s achievements,” said Dr.
Malaki.
Dr.
Malaki said Ramya was always kind and compassionate and worried about women and children and who motivated him to take legal studies.
He also shared alternative legal forums in Bengaluru in 2014 and worked for rights and justice for Bengaluru temples, street vendors, transgender, sex workers and their children.
