Bengaluru: A 34-year-old woman suffering from acute pelvic pain for at least one year has received a new rental of life after a doctor from the city removing 222 fibroids, truly weighted 2.2kg, from the womb.
Professional Media Ritika underwent four and a half hours operation on October 6, and the doctor in Sakra World Hospital preserved her womb.
Ritika Rahim was found enlarged (measuring 8 months pregnant women), causing a bulge in the lower abdomen.
The uterine fibroids are non-cancerous, tumors that depend on estrogen, usually occurs in the age of child bearings.
They cause anemia and in the case of Ritika, the hemoglobin level has fallen to 7 grams per desilitre.
Dr.
Shantala Thuppanna, Senior Consultant, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, WORLD SAKRA Hospital, which operates on the Ritika, said uterine fibroids are common at around 40-50% of women.
But only a few have symptoms.
“In the case of the Ritika, he is anemic and faces severe bleeding despite practicing yoga every day and maintains an active lifestyle.
He has waited about a year to undergo surgery because of a pandemic,” said Dr.
Shantala.
During the operation, the doctor found that fibroids – with various sizes and shapes (one resembling large cauliflower) – located under the bladder and spread on the left side of the womb.
“Fibroids are near important structures in the stomach, which makes complicated operations when they appear like wine bunches.
We can remove all fibroids in their uterus that appear compressed in MRI scanning, without complications,” explained Dr.
Shantala.
According to the doctor, the uterine fibroid is made of muscle and fibrous tissue, and varies in size and shape.
Symptoms include pelvic pain, abnormal menstrual cycles, and sometimes even abortion, premature delivery, bulges in the stomach, and urine disorders and motion.
“They sometimes go alone.
However, when left untreated, this fibroid can grow in size and numbers, resulting in worsening symptoms and causing further complications, including anemia and infertility,” he said, adding to the initial symptoms should not be ignored.
