Bengaluru: It is common for motorists to clean their vehicles in the morning while the engine heated up.
Drivers often think that revving machines will produce acceleration on a better road.
However, a Bengaluru professional who did the same thing, lost the finger after being trapped in a bicycle chain.
On the morning of September 28, Rahul (name changed), who worked with a logistics company, prepared his new motorcycle to go to work.
He has a running machine and stores it on the first teeth, so the tire can rotate and he can clean it faster.
But for his bad luck, the cloth touched the vehicle chain, dragged into it, decided two fingers of his right hand.
However, thanks to timely action, one finger can be saved after an eight-hour operation by a team of doctors at Manipal Hospital, Varthur Road.
Rahul, 35, who lives in Varthur, told Toi his family quickly covered the finger which was completely cut off in a clean cloth, stored in ice packaging and rushed to the hospital.
He said high rpm (revolution / rotation per minute) from his new bicycle engine and lack of casing around the chain caused the accident.
“I’ll clean my old bike in the same way, which, however, has a casing around the chain.
After I bought a new bike, during the first service, I was told the chain had to be cleaned.
On that day, I saw a chain rotating faster and wanted to Clean it with a toothbrush.
But when I was late, I decided to clean it with a cloth wrapped around my finger, “Rahul said.
Rahul said the pain was so unbearable so he couldn’t even think of surgery at that time.
“I want them to cut even my index finger, which is partially disconnected, and let it get well,” he said, adding that his family members and doctors assured him to undergo installation surgery.
Rahul underwent plastic and microvascular surgery – starting at 12:30 a.m.
to 9pm – where arteries, veins, and nerves join using stitches thinner than human hair under the enlarged microscope along with bone fixation, tendons, soft tissue and skin.
However, after two days, the middle finger, which was connected back, began to spin black because of blood supply blockage and in the end it must be removed.
Dr.
Kartik Shrinivas Tallam, Consultant – Plastic Surgery Department, Manipal Hospital, Varthur Road said Rahul was dismissed with plaster and was followed up to dress weekly.
After physiotherapy, he has even started writing now, the doctor added.
